Albert Einstein Medical Center: Orthodontic Residency Program
University of Pennsylvania Update
On behalf of the board of the Greater Philadelphia Society of Orthodontists, I hope you are prepared for a great Summer and are able to spend time with your family and friends. Recharging the mind and spirit is necessary to be able to provide care for our family of patients and Summer is a great time to recharge.
I'd like to thank our immediate past president, Dr. Antonino G. Secchi, for his spectacular leadership and organization of last year's meeting by Dr. Raffaele Spena who traveled from Naples, Italy to give an inspiring lecture on "How to Deal with Complex Daily Malocclusions and Orthodontic Tooth Movements". This lecture was extraordinary in both the breadth of his topic and the specifics that he was able to share in an open and honest fashion that was inspiring as well as very practical.
The Greater Philadelphia Society of Orthodontists is preparing for another remarkable meeting on November 15, 2017. I am pleased to announce that Dr. David Sarver will be presenting "Dentofacial Esthetics: a new face on interdisciplinary dentistry". His lecture will address the following: In Restorative dentistry, aesthetics is discussed in terms of anterior tooth display and smile design. To Orthodontists and Oral surgeons, it is the facial profile. Interdisciplinary treatment in dentistry has progressed enormously in the past two decades, with collaboration between dentists and all the specialties of dentistry. This has resulted in superior results compared to those achieved working without collaboration. But our vision can now expand to broader appearance issues. With the assessment and treatment of other dimensions of smile and facial esthetics, the target for the patient may be the ultimate dentofacial esthetic outcome. This lecture will demonstrate the coordination of care between the disciplines of dentistry and facial plastic surgery resulting in outstanding enhancement of our aesthetic and functional results. We will introduce the imaginative use of new technologies for diagnosis, patient communication, and interdisciplinary communication and documentation. Dr. Sarver is always enlightening and entertaining and it is a pleasure to have him for an entire day.

She continued her dental education in the general practice residency (GPR) program at Albert Einstein Medical Center (AEMC) Philadelphia rising to the rank of Chief Resident in her second year. Subsequently, in addition to her time in private general dental practice, Reem has been a regular, volunteer faculty member in the GPR program at Einstein. She lives in Philadelphia.
Dr. Catherine Lowry is a graduate of the University of the Pacific. She was a member of the Army Dental Corp since her graduation. Her most recent posting was at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Catherine is a native of California. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, camping and soccer. Catherine lives in Center City Philadelphia.

Prior to entering UPenn Dental, Juliana completed her Masters of Science in Biomedical Sciences with a Forensic Biology concentration at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She resides in the greater Philadelphia area.
We extend our gratitude to the members of the Selection Committee – Drs. Alan Borislow, Steve Cohen, Irene Valenza, Michael Roth and Harold Middleberg - and to the then second year residents named above for hosting those who were interviewed. We also sincerely thank each of our volunteer and part-time faculty for their invaluable support and dedication to the program and for the education of our residents. Without the valued commitment of the part-time faculty, it would be almost impossible to provide a quality educational experience. We are indebted to all of our community-based clinicians who give of their time to teach and mentor our residents.
We are happy to report that all three of the 2nd year residents passed their Board examination which was administered in April 2017.
Additionally, as 2nd year residents, Drs. Chirag Patel and Sheila Othman, presented their ePosters at the AAO meeting in San Diego. Dr. Patel's ePoster was entitles "Evaluation of the effects of TAD-tissue supported rapid palatal expander on the transverse dimension of the maxilla through CBCT analysis". Dr. Othman's ePoster was "Comparison of the shear bond strength between two adhesive systems between two ceramic crown materials".
Program Graduate Activities
Dr. Erin Mahoney (Class of 2016) is practicing in the greater Baltimore, Maryland area. Several of her Mock Board cases, which were completed during her time in residency, were on display at the CDABO tables at the AAO meeting in May. Dr. Kathleen Pale (Class of 2016) has associated with Drs. Harold Middleberg and Chuck Gemmi in their practices in the greater Philadelphia area. Dr. Justin Silvestre (Class of 2016) has joined a practice in the greater Philadelphia area. Erin, Kathleen and Justin are preparing to present their clinical cases to the ABO for their certification at an upcoming examination. Additionally, Kathleen and Justin will join our orthodontic faculty this academic year. They all report that they are doing well personally and professionally.
Faculty Activities
We congratulate each of our faculty on their many and varied gifts and talents which they graciously provide to our profession and to our communities. These include, Dr. Mark McDonough who currently serves as President of the Greater Philadelphia Society of Orthodontists (GPSO) and who will host this November's annual meeting featuring Dr. David Sarver. In addition, Drs. Steven Cohen, Chuck Gemmi, Michael Roth, Matt Etter and Paul Adams serve as GPSO board members.
With regard to new curricular initiatives at Einstein, Dr. Kathleen Pale and Dr. Justin Silvestre will be assuming greater roles in the education of the residents by presenting seminars which will review the ABO recommended literature. Dr. Alex Apple has assumed additional responsibilities, for the Cephalometric and the Indirect Bonding courses, in addition to his clinical teaching.
We offer our sincere gratitude to the faculty members who participated in the recent interviews to identify our new Associate Program Director. These faculty members were: Drs. Paul Adams, Alex Apple, Alan Borislow, Steve Cohen, Matthew Etter, Chuck Gemmi, Stuart Messinger, Harold Middleberg, Kathleen Pale, Michael Roth and Irene Valenza. The Department was very pleased with the resultant comments and outcome of this rigorous evaluation process. We had the opportunity to meet many talented, passionate and generous orthodontists who were willing to take up the challenges of academia while, for some, still maintaining their clinical practices.
Leadership Changes
At this time, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Mary E. Burns joined our faculty as the Associate Program Director in the Division of Orthodontics, Department of Dental Medicine on July 1, 2017. Dr. Burns earned her Doctorate in Dental Medicine (DMD) from the University of Pittsburgh. She then completed a General Practice Residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Pittsburgh. Following her GPR, she practiced general dentistry for several years in the greater Philadelphia area before entering The Ohio State University for her specialty training in Orthodontics. While at The Ohio State, she earned her Masters of Science in Orthodontics as well as a Masters of Arts in Higher Education Administration. Dr. Burns is a Board Certified in Orthodontist and has been a Master's Thesis advisor and mentor for orthodontic residents at West Virginia University, the University of Nebraska and the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Burns also maintains a private practice in Orthodontics in New Hope, PA, while continuing to lecture locally, nationally and internationally. Of equal excitement is that Dr. Alan Borislow has agreed to remain an integral member of our part-time faculty as he transitions from the position of Associate Program Director to become a member of the voluntary attending staff. His continuing commitment will further enhance and support the academic and clinical missions of our Department. As many of you may know, Alan Borislow became a voluntary attending faculty member in the Division of Orthodontics in 1968, and in 1978 he became the Department of Dental Medicine Chairman while maintaining his positions as Chairman and Program Director of the Orthodontic Division at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia.
Even though Alan Borislow is transitioning to a volunteer, part-time position, his duties in our Department continue to be many and appreciated. In addition to his teaching and clinical duties in the Division of Orthodontics he maintains other commitments within the hospital including coordination and systematic organization of the many Einstein departmental historical photos and documents that are digitally stored. Alan plans to complete this archival documentation project for the future generations of our Department so that each may learn, as well as have access, to our rich history as a wonderful, hospital-based academic dental department.
We welcome each of you to come and visit us at Einstein Ortho. We are proud of our legacy and of the residents that we are educating today to become tomorrow's clinical and professional leaders.
