About the Guest Speakers
Dr. Fonseca is currently practicing in Asheville, NC. He has maintained an active oral surgery practice throughout his academic career, with an emphasis on orthognathic surgery. He recently completed his tenure as Dean and Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine. He has also served on the faculties of the Universities of North Carolina, Iowa and Michigan. He is widely published and has edited seven texts in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Fonseca is the recipient of numerous awards including the AAOMA Research Award, the Donald B. Osbon Outstanding Educator Award and the Gies Award.
Dr. Timothy A. Turvey is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UNC at Chapel Hill. He earned a BA degree at Villanova University and a DDS at Columbia College of Dental and Oral Surgery. He served internship and residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Health Science Center in Dallas (Parkland Memorial Hospital, John Peter Smith Hospital). He is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and a former examiner and examination developer, a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Turvey is the co-founder and co-director of the UNC Dentofacial Program and a member of the UNC Craniofacial Center. His major teaching occurs supervising Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. His interests include reconstructive and esthetic surgeries of the craniofacial and maxillofacial regions.
